Find out what dental veneers are all about
Laughing and smiling is something you should do all the time. Smiling is good for your health, and says a lot about your personality! If you feel uncomfortable smiling or you are smiling with your lips closed, may be is high time you look into it. There is a great option to restore your beautiful smile that doesn’t involve dental surgery.
What are dental veneers? These are custom made porcelain, composite resin or ceramic “faces” that are attached to the teeth to restore shape, size or color. In other words, these are custom designed shells for covering teeth surfaces n case of any teeth imperfections. Veneers are used to cover imperfections on teeth that could be crooked or discolored or misshapen.
Veneers are primarily made from porcelain but they can also be made chairside from composite resin. Composite resin veneers are used to fix minor issues small chipping and teeth shape discrepancies. While most dental restoration methods require reshaping or drilling of the affected teeth, composite resin veneers require very little if any enamel removed. Composite resin is a quick but effective treatment that is usually bonded on the outer surface of the tooth. The dentist will mold the composite into the desired contour and therefore requiring high levels of expertise and technical skills.
Porcelain veneers are custom made porcelain used to restore teeth appearance and improve esthetics. Porcelain veneers are great options for those who have discolored, crooked or chipped teeth. Visiting your dentist for a consult is the first thing you need to do to determine whether porcelain veneers are the right option for you. The great thing about porcelain veneers is that they are able to create a beautiful natural look that is very subtle and esthetic at the same time. Because porcelain is made of glass, they are resistant to stains and chipping and are more durable overall.
Why do you need veneers treatment?
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for veneers? If you are unhappy with your smile because you feel as if your teeth are discolored, crowded or not the ideal shape, then you may benefit from a consultation for veneers. Several treatment options are available to improve esthetics such as porcelain veneers, composite veneers (bonding), and Invisalign.
There are several instances where veneers would be an ideal treatment option. Veneers are great for people who have crooked or misshapen teeth, discolored teeth, gaps in between the teeth, or for those who want to improve overall esthetics and appearance.
Advantages of Dental Veneers
The following are some of the major advantages of dental veneers:
- Easy Whitening Solution: Over the years — after drinking copious amounts of coffee, smoking, eating colored artificial food, etc, your teeth eventually lose their original whiteness and become yellow or brown. Once your enamel is stained, you can bleach it either at home or through teeth whitening solutions at the dentist’s office. However, these solutions don’t have exact results. Your teeth may whiten relatively, but not to the degree that you want. Furthermore, the whitening may wear off soon again. However, with veneers, you can get your teeth to be exactly as white as you want and they are stain-resistant so they’re a lot less likely to get discolored.
- Cosmetic Problems: Veneers are basically artificial teeth placed in front of your real teeth. As such, if you have a lot of crooked or damaged teeth, you can get dental veneers to camouflage your cosmetic dental problems.
- Replacing Enamel: Our teeth’s enamel may be powerful, but they’re not invincible. Over time, tooth enamel may dissolve or weaken due to rigorous brushing or consumption of acidic carbonated drinks. In these cases, veneers serve as the perfect replacement for teeth enamel.
Who is more susceptible to needing dental veneers?
Discolored, crooked and misaligned teeth can be a reason why some people avoid smiling. Porcelain veneers is just one of several ways to restore your smile. However, it is important to note that this treatment is irreversible, meaning that once part of the enamel is shaved off, it cannot be regrown or reversed back. Thus, it is important to get all the necessary information before deciding which treatment option is best for you.
There are some cases in which dental veneers is the best treatment option. For instance, if you have minor craze lines or rugged incisal edges then veneers are a great option for you. However, more complex treatments may be necessary if the fractures are larger such as placing crowns on the entire tooth to protect it from further fracture. The same applies on crooked teeth. Veneers do a great job addressing and improving teeth that have minor crowding. For teeth that have moderate to severe crowding, it’s best to properly align the teeth first with orthodontics or Invisalign.
How do you treat a patient using dental veneers?
Unlike composite resin veneers, porcelain takes longer to fabricate because they need to be fabricated by the lab. First, the teeth need to be prepared by shaving off the top part of the enamel. After all, the dentist takes an impression of the prepared teeth and sends it off to the dental laboratory for the lab to be designed and contoured to the desired shape and color. It may take several days for the porcelain designs to be ready so the patient will have to book a return appointment to cement the veneers.
Although porcelain veneers may take two appointments and cost more money, they are the most resilient and esthetic. Composite resins take only one appointment to mold and is done chairside and can still improve esthetic concerns significantly. However, they could stain over time and are not as durable as porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are the gold standard to achieving the best, most esthetic and natural look.
The first step to any dental treatment is consultation. The dentist will have to examine your dental status and determine whether veneers are the right treatment for you. This means looking into any outstanding dental problems and ensure that there are no cases of tooth decay, gum disease or active inflammation.
- Trimming the tooth
The next step will be trimming the teeth. Porcelain veneers may require the dentist to remove parts of the enamel to make room for the porcelain shell. Once the trimming is completed, the dentist will take impressions of the teeth prepared. Temporary veneers will be made chairside as an interim while the veneers are being fabricated by the lab. Composite resins, on the other hand, may require less trimming of the enamel if any. No impressions or second visits are necessary.
- Placing the Veneers
After the dental lab has fabricated porcelain veneers to its ideal, final shape and contour, the temporary veneers are removed and the porcelain is cemented onto the prepped teeth.
