Are you ready to transform your smile?

Dental bone and ridge preservation treatment process after a tooth extraction

People who have lost their teeth through extractions often think that the problem is over for their jaw bone. Only a few of them know the importance of having a jaw bone area or ridge preservation treatment done. Dental bone and ridge preservation is a dental treatment process done to protect your bone levels after a tooth is taken out. Generally, when a tooth is pulled out, the bone goes through drastic changes. With its basic role of supporting the root of a tooth gone, your jaw bone has no other purpose left fulfill. So it will dissolve and release its minerals into the blood circulatory system and other parts of your body. In order to prevent such a problem, your dental specialist will perform one of the several bone grafting treatments.

What is a bone replacement graft or ridge preservation after a tooth extraction?

This is generally a process of placing a bone into a tooth extraction site to keep the jawbone ready for the dental implant placement process. Besides making it possible for your dentist to fill your empty socket, a ridge preservation procedure will enhance your smile. Also referred to as the socket preservation surgery, ridge preservation prevents bone loss due to the tooth loss.  There are two kinds of dental ridges you can select: lower dental ridges and upper dental ridges. Your lower jaw (mandible) is usually denser than the upper one and so the process of grafting is rather simple and quick. The oral surgeon simply needs to have a biocompatible bone or tissue growth matrix that is usually in the form of bone tissue barrier membranes. The upper jawbone (maxilla) is not as heavy as the lower jaw, as on top of it there are empty mucus-lined cavities of your sinuses. When your maxilla dental ridge is preserved, a sinus augmentation surgery would have to be done. This is to lift the sinus floor prior to strengthening your jawbone with a bone graft.

Why do we need bone augmentation or ridge preservation after tooth loss?

It is extremely beneficial to preserve your jawbone after pulling out one or more teeth. Through bone grafting, your socket will be fortified with a new bone graft and allowed to develop a new structure. Without a process like this, you could easily develop a sunken mouth that most seniors have. This can be so bad in an era when numerous people can do anything to retain their youthfulness. That’s why you need to have your oral surgeon perform a ridge preservation treatment as soon as you can. It will provide the following advantages:

  • Conserve your bone tissue after a tooth gets extracted
  • Keep your jawbone and soft tissues from collapsing in the empty sockets
  • Keeps the site ready for a future placement of the dental implant or another restorative procedure.
  • It reduces the need for extra grafting.
  • A minimally invasive procedure, ridge preservation hurts just a little
  • Keeps the ridge lovely, including your front teeth ridges, and this can boost your smile.

Who can get a bone graft or ridge preservation procedure done?

Any person who has lost a tooth or is in the process of having it pulled out can try bone grafting. The end goal is to have an empty tooth socket filled at a later date and your dentist can only place a dental implant if your bone structure is robust. Typically, soft tissue and bone can start to collapse after a tooth gets extracted. Without the tooth root to stimulate the jaw bone, it can start to deteriorate and fade following a tooth loss. If you have a number of teeth removed, causing substantial bone loss, you should consider getting bone grafts. That’s because without enough bone structure under your socket, placing dental implants would be difficult, painful and costly. So, if you are a victim of tooth extractions or have lost your teeth in other ways, you should visit the best dental clinic to have a socket preservation surgery done. The process will rebuild and stabilize the area where your tooth had once occupied. If possible, a ridge preservation procedure should be carried out during the extraction period as it can promote your appearance of the ridge and prevent bony defects.

How is a bone graft or ridge preservation treatment done?

First of all, your professional dentist will remove your decayed tooth while ensuring that the existing bone in the socket is not disturbed. Next, he or she will place a special type of bone grafting item in the socket. Common kinds include: xenograft, alloplast, autogenous graft and allograft. This grafting material is made to substitute your bone and arouse bone growth inside the empty socket. After the placement procedure, the dentist will stabilize the grafting material using stitches and a collagen membrane. The process of healing can take months, usually three to five months. When healing occurs, your oral specialist will carry out the implantation process.

When to get your bone grafting done?

People don’t have to wait until they have lost significant tissue and bone to get ridge preservation treatment done. They can do it at the same time as having their tooth extracted or a few weeks after. The aim is to preserve or build your jawbone when it is not sufficient for dental implants to be fixed. Your bone must be adequate, width and height, to get a dental implant, and it is a known fact that a lot of people experience bone loss (30 to 60 percent in the first year) after having a tooth removed.

As a result, the earlier you undergo a bone grafting procedure the easier it will get to protect your bone from loss.  Advanced dental clinics have surgeons who can add bone grafts to fresh teeth extraction sites via the ridge preservation or socket preservation surgery. Additionally, they can add a bone graft to the jaw if it lacks sufficient bone width and height—ridge augmentation. Moreover, they can carry out a sinus augmentation surgery or a sinus lift.  These processes are the most effective and inexpensive ways to conserve your bone ridge’s structure (width and height). If height is inadequate, your dentist will add a bone graft to your sinus floor. To learn more about this, give your favorite dental specialist a call or a visit today.

Excellent service. Great first impression! Best cleaning I've had in several years, my mouth feels amazing. They even took the time to show me how to brush more effectively. My teeth are back to being pearly white. They were very knowledgeable in regards to my insurance and I've had no issues. The service there is impeccable!

The staff is wonderful, very friendly and informative. I love how they not only take X-rays, but also photos of all your teeth and put them on the big screen. They spent as much time as I needed to go over each area and explain specifics of each tooth. I definitely have a greater understanding of what is going on in there and what I need to do. I also love their space, it has a calming vibe with all kinds of artwork on display. You almost feel like you’re not at the dentist! Thank you all so much, I look forward to seeing you all again! (Said no one to their dentist 😉 )

Beautiful location and office. Very friendly and welcoming staff! I had a great time conversing with them about movies and music. Dr. Nguyen and his staff were very knowledgeable and stressed the importance of making sure the patient knew what their game plan was. The office is very high tech as well so it was super cool to know that I was getting the latest tech being use on me.

Love the location, the dentist AND the staff. Everyone there is awesome. It's rare that I leave a dentist office feeling just as good as when I arrive. I was sad I didn't get to see Snickers, but all in all I had a great experience my first time here. Glad to finally have a new "home" dentist since moving to Texas.
