As you get older, there are going to be more and more problems with your teeth. It could be that they start to decay, get damaged beyond the state you can cope with, or just start to get discolored and unsightly. It can be for practical or vanity reasons but having treatment at a midtown dentist will be a good thing to do. Before any treatment begins, they will tell you everything you need to know and allow you to ask anything that they have not covered. There was a time when the only thing to do was to have the tooth removed. Before long there would be the need for dentures, but now this situation can be delayed, sometimes indefinitely. Invisalign users have had concerns that the braces will lead to teeth breaking, but this is not going to happen. The worst that could happen, is that you will not notice a chip until the braces come off and are changed.
What is a Crown?
Quite simply, it is a case that fits over your tooth, and protects it. When manufacturing a crown, it will be necessary to have impressions and/or x-rays. This will ensure that it is the right shape and foes not cause you any difficulties. There are a variety of reasons to have one fitted: -
- A tooth has broken or been chipped and is in a position that may look unsightly and require treatment at some time in the future.
- There is a weakness and the risk that it may chip or break and as this could happen at any time you may not be able to make an appointment with the dentist is time to get the correct treatment.
- Covers a tooth that has decayed to an extent that a filling would not be enough to fix it, and even if it was refilled, it would only be delaying the inevitability of a crown.
- To cover a tooth that is crooked or stained. It will be easier to put a crown over it rather than go through the process of a brace, although this does not mean that a brace cannot be used when there are crowns in place.
A dental crown 77002 can be made from different materials and some will be manufactured to blend in, while others will be made to stand out. Whereas a filling will deal with the problem as it stands, a crown will cover it for good and there is no way that it can get any worse. It will be sealed inside the crown and does not alter. Although it may take a short period of time to get used to having the crown in your mouth, you will soon get used to it. Once in situ, they will look and function in the same way that your own teeth do.
Crown v Cap
In case you are worried that you might not be getting what you wanted, the terms are for the same item. More people tend to say cap while the technical term is crown. They will cover the tooth in its entirety and the only time there might be a difference is when there is a different color used – very often a metal. When the covering is silver or gold it can be referred to as a crown, but when it is the same color as the tooth it is always called a cap. A crown will not be 100% gold as this will not be strong enough to perform the duties expected. It will tend to be anything from about 20% up to around 80%. Even though it is mixed with other substances, a gold colored tooth will be more expensive than other varieties.
Crowns – or caps if you prefer - can be made from a variety of substances. They are:
- Ceramic – often this is going to be zirconia or porcelain and will have been color coded to make sure that it is the same shade as the existing teeth.
- Metal – although these can also be white, they tend to have a contrasting colour to the teeth. They will be made from platinum, gold and palladium. Sometimes non-precious metals will be substituted.
- A mixture – the interior of the crown will be metal, but so as they match the teeth, the outside will be ceramic.
- Acrylic – this will not be suitable for the finished product but tends to be used when there is a temporary cap put in place.
Getting the Correct Material
Whatever you choose, there will be elements that are right and some that may be less rewarding. The way to choose the material is to decide what is most important to you. Are the capped teeth going to be seen all the time or are they near to the back of your mouth? Are you concerned about how good they look? How long are they expected to last? If you are in your 20’s you may want to make a different choice than you would if you were in your 60’s. A 77027 dentist will give you all the information you need so that you can make any decisions that you have to make and also understand the options available to you.
Ceramic crowns get their translucent look from the fact that they are build up in layers. They are constructed with great care in a lab and it is for this reason that they are the choice of crown when it is front teeth that are to be covered. They will be strong and will work as well as your own teeth, but like your own teeth, are at risk of chips and cracks.
Gold crowns will last as long as you need them to. In case you are worried that their strength may be to the detriment of your other teeth, then there is nothing to worry about. They will not damage them, even when they are both used to bite. While younger people may like the idea of being different and having a golden smile, a lot of people are put off by it. A dentist in uptown will have explained all of this to you before you make the decision as to what type of crown you want.
PFM crowns have a level of the same strength as metal but look as good as porcelain. The problem with them is the layering which tends to stop them looking like your normal teeth. They can crack in the same way ordinary teeth can, but at least here, the metal under layer will not be damaged.
Work Done Abroad
There are times when there is the need to have a few teeth crowned at the same time. It can be tempting to go abroad and have the treatment carried out at a lower cost, but this is not advisable. There is nothing to say that there will be a problem with the work, but you need to bear in mind that there might be.
If you do return and find there is a problem, you could end up spending a lot more to put it right. It is unlikely that your insurance company will even pay for the repairs and you could find yourself spending double what you would have done if you had stayed home and been treated. An uptown dentist here will have all the equipment they need to get the job right first time. If at some stage there is an issue, they will also be able to correct it without you have to undergo long and costly repeats.
How the Tooth is Capped
There are a few stages that you will have to go through. Most of the preparation should be done in one or two meetings and then you can go in for the main part of the procedure. It is never a pleasant experience to suffer a broken tooth but knowing how to deal with it will make the situation a whole lot better.
With the preparation, the dentist will remove a lot of enamel to make room for the crown. In certain cases, the gums may have to be treated to make sure the crown fits correctly. To ensure their strength, the cap must be at least 2mm thick and this is the amount of enamel that will be removed. The tooth will be fully clean, and all decay and infection will be removed. The tooth may be added to so as there is a decent base. An impression is taken, and this will be used to make the crown. Usually a temporary cover will be made to protect the tooth until the crown arrives a few weeks later.
There is no need to worry about the color – the main crown will have been made to match your teeth exactly. This appointment should take around an hour. As it is accepted that dental pain is very hard to deal with, you should find that the surrounding area will be numbed throughout the procedure. If you find that it is wearing off, make sure to advise the dentist and they will be able to wait until more can be administered.
Fitting the crown
This will again mean numbing the mouth and removing the temporary crown. Cement will be applied, and the crown will be fitted and secured. Before this stage you should raise any concerns, or it may be too late. This appointment will be shorter – something over 30 minutes and under an hour. It may take you a little time to get used to the way that the crowns feel in your mouth and as long as everything has gone smoothly, within a couple of weeks you should forget there is anything different.
A Quicker Method
Cerec crowns are going to cut the treatment time and most importantly for others, there will be no need to take impressions. Digital scans will give the dentist all the information they need. This is a new procedure and dentists have not got any long-term data on them. The initial findings are that they are ideal for the back teeth, but if it is front teeth that need crowns, then there are other methods that are a lot better. Midtown dentistry is picking up on the idea of using this when it is a tooth in the back of the mouth, but some patients may be resistant. While they are aware of alternatives that are proven, it will be hard to get them to try something new.
The crown will last a long time, but it won’t be forever. Gold will last longer, but as previously mentioned it is not to everyone’s taste. You should be given a timescale of 5 to 15 years, with gold lasting past the 25 unless it wears down or the tooth underneath decays.
The Days After
You will be advised to avoid eating anything that needs a lot of chewing or are particularly hard. If there are only crowns on one side of the mouth, eat with the other and take extra care when flossing.
After a while you could try testing the crown on not too hard items and building up. If there is anything you are concerned about, you should contact the dentist right away. Other cleaning should be carried out as normal. If the gums recede at all there can be pain and visiting a hygienist is the best way to prevent this.
If a crown comes off at any time, a quick visit to the dentist may save it. The same applies to chips and these should be dealt with quickly, as with just a little time without a cover, you could end up with a painful tooth. Chips can be repaired with the use of resin, but it will not last. In the long run there will be the need for a new cap. If the crown has come off altogether, your speed in making an appointment may mean that it can be saved.
